Wie positioniert sich Walter zu seiner Beziehung zu Sabeth?
Walter Faber lernt Sabeth auf dem Schiff nach Europa kennen. Sie steht vor ihm in der Schlange und vor Langeweile betrachtet Faber sie genauer. Später meint er, dass er sich genau an ihr Aussehen erinnert ("Sie trug (ich erinnere mich genau) einen schwarzen Pullover..." (S. 70) ), daher muss sie ihm aufgefallen sein.
Von da an schaut er ihr des Öfteren beim Ping-Pong spielen zu.
"Ab und zu blieb ich wieder beim Ping-Pong stehen, ..." (S. 71)
Obwohl sie einen Freund oder Verlobten hat, wie Walter Faber vermutet, interessiert er sich doch für sie und als er einen Ping-Pong-Ball für sie aufhebt, wirkt es so, als wolle er ihre Aufmerksamkeit bekommen.
Doch das will er sich nicht eingestehen, denn er beteuert "ohne mich aufzudrängen" (S. 71). Und später: "Ich stellte ihr nicht nach." (S. 72) und "Keinesfalls wollte ich mich aufdrängen." (S. 83).
Er spielt mit Sabeth Ping-Pong, scheint jedoch ein wenig eifersüchtig auf ihren Freund zu sein, als er erzählt:
"Ihr Partner vom Nachmittag, ein Jüngling mit Schnäuzchen, spielte natürlich viel imposanter." (S. 72)
Das merkt auch Sabeth, denn sie meinte, er sei eifersüchtig (S. 73).
Er unterhält sich immer öfter mit Sabeth, schwärmt ihr von Maschinen vor.
Sie erinnert ihn an Hanna, auch wenn ihm ein Vergleich der beiden an den Haaren herbeigezogen vorkommt. Er verwirft den Gedanken. Sabeth findet ihn zunächst komisch.
Schließlich macht Faber Sabeth einen Heiratsantrag, der allerdings nur in vier Zeilen erwähnt wird und daher für mich rätselhaft bleibt.
"..., und fragte, ob sie mich denn heiraten würde.
Sabeth errötete.
Ob ich das ernst meinte?
Warum nicht?" (S. 95)
Nach der Schiffsreise trennen sich die Wege der beiden, doch Walter Faber geht mehrmals in den Louvre, in der Hoffnung sie wiederzusehen, obwohl er sich nicht wirklich für Kunst begeistern kann.
"Anderntags (Sonntag) ging ich in den Louvre, aber von einem Mädchen mit rötlichem Roßschwanz war nichts zu sehen." (S. 99)
Er trifft das Mädchen schließlich wieder, lädt sie in die Oper ein und begleitet sie auf ihrer Reise nach Griechenland. Sabeths "Kunstbedürfnis" ist für ihn als Techniker und Rationalisten schwer zu ertragen (S. 107), doch er ist trotzdem glücklich.
Er erkennt, dass Sabeth anders denkt als er, der schon viel Erfahrung gesammelt hat. Er hält sie für naiv. Faber meint, dass für sie nur die Zukunft zählt und dass sie sich über alles freut.
"Das machte mich eifersüchtig, mag sein, ..." (S. 109)
Als er auf S. 118 erfährt, dass Hanna ihre Mutter ist, denkt er darüber nach, dass Sabeth sein Kind sein könnte, beschließt dann aber, dass sie Joachims Kind sein muss. Er will einfach nicht wahrhaben, dass sie mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit sein Kind ist, da er sich mittlerweile in sie verliebt hat.
"Dabei dachte ich nicht einen Augenblick daran, dass Sabeth sogar mein eignes Kind sein könnte. Es lag im Bereich der Möglichkeit, theoretisch, aber ich dachte nicht daran. Genauer gesagt, ich glaubte es nicht. (S. 118)
In einem Hotel melden sie sich als "Miß Faber und Mister Faber" (S. 122) an.
Auffällig ist, dass Walter Faber das ganze Buch über beteuert, dass er nicht wusste, dass sie sein Kind ist. Sonst hätte er seiner Meinung nach anders gehandelt. Somit beteuert er seine "Unschuld".
Durch Sabeths Liebe lernt er, Gefühle zuzulassen und zu zeigen. Er verliebt sich in sie und sie sich in ihn. Aus ihrer Begegnung entwickelt sich eine Beziehung, obwohl sich die beiden in ihren Interessen und in ihrer Weltanschauung unterscheiden.
